If you stopped the car when the engine warning light told you you had a problem, you could have saved a minimum $3,000 it will cost you to install a replacement engine for the one you fried.

Could be a couple different things:
1. Ran too low on oil
2. Thermostat stuck closed and overheated
3. Water pump went out and overheated
From the description, though, it's kinda irrelevant how it happened. The engine sounds cooked. Time for a full rebuild. Unless you're really attached to this vehicle or like doing such things, time for another car.

Sounds like lubrication failure. This caused undue friction on some motor members i.e piston, cam shafts, or main bearings. Repair would cost you $$$$. I you love the car, replace the whole engine for a brand new crate engine. Otherwise, source for wrecking yards that carry the same motor. good luck

to check if the engine has locked, put the car into first gear and try and push the car forwards (while the car is not running) if it gets hard to push then easier then easier and so on the engine is not locked but if it will not budge then the engine is locked and you need a new engine because the pistons have melted to the inside of the cylinders. (I did it to my car and had to replace the engine)
