There are two types of rich cities. There are the "boutique cities" that are more or less extended, upscale shopping malls like Carmel-By-The-Sea, and there are "real cities" where people work and live and go to school.

I lived in the richest "real city" in America for about twenty years off and on, from 1963 to 1991. When I got there in '63, the biggest industry was prunes. Really. Prunes. I paid for college by working summers at one of the many canneries there (Del Monte).

Now this city has the highest individual GDP of any city in America. Any guesses?

Right. San Jose, California. The heart of Silicon Valley.
