Let x ounces of water is required to be evaporated for converting 36 ounces of 4% salt solution to a 5% one
By the problem,
0.04*36=0.05(36-x)
or,1.44=1.8-0.05x
or,0.05x=1.8-1.44=0.36
x=0.36/0.05=7.2
Therefore 7.2 ounces of water is to evaporated

0.04(36) - x = 0.05(36 - x)
1.44 - x = 1.8 - 0.05x
0.95x = 0.36
x = 36/95

Answer: 36/95 OR 0.37895 ounces

(36-x)/36 = .95
36-x = .95*36= 34.2
x = 36-34.2 = 1.8 ounces
