His musical style was continuously changing. What he released in the 60's sounded nothing like his material in the early 70's, and that sounded nothing like his material in the mid 70's, and that sounded nothing like his material in the late 70's, and that sounded nothing like his material in the 80's and so on!
My favorite period would have to be between the 'Chungas Revenge' album in 1970, and the 1976 'Zoot Allures' album. In that span of 6 years he released 15 albums.
I guess a lot of younger people who don't know much about the man or his music want to download a few individual songs in order to see what Frank is all about.
You really need the 'entire album experience' in order to achieve this properly in my opinion.
I would just try experimenting, and see what you like. Keep in mind that just because one Zappa song might sound a certain way, that not all of his music is same, unlike many artists of today.
Frank released around 70 albums during his 26 years as a recording musician.
Starting with the albums 'Apostrophe', 'Overnight Sensation', 'One Size Fits All', is a good place to begin. Then when you're feeling bold and aventurous, try getting into his more bizarre (no pun intended) material like 'Just Another Band From L.A.' and ' Fillmore East - June 1971'.
'Zoot Allures' is one of my favorite albums, and I'd recommend that too. His 60's psych stuff is great also, but sounds much much different from any of his 70's material.
I love everything the man ever did!
Check out the DVD' reissues of his concert films, 'Baby Snakes' and 'The Dub Room Special'.
Here are some reviews from the 'Rate Your Music' site;

I think by reading some of the individual reviews at the link above will help you immensely.
As far as songs go, 'Billy the Mountain' is one of my favorites (if you can even call it a song).
Hope that helps!

Ah, certainly one of my prominent artists. that's one situation i like approximately him. He has certainly one of those huge discography, and anyone is fascinated in a distinctive style of Zappa. i opt to propose attempting some from each and every checklist to get a competent consensus of the artist as an entire. a million. The Sheik Yerbouti Tango 2. The Gumbo transformations 3. Watermelon in Easter Hay 4. Yo Mama 5. Inca Roads 6. Zoot Allures i could not come to a determination on a definitive 5, so I picked six. BQ: Sheik Yerbouti or warm Rats BQ2: between the suitable. BQ3: first situation that is composed of techniques is Smokey Robinson, yet even he will possibly not have launched as many.

Songs? I think you kinda have to look at Zappa's albums as works unto themselves. Standouts, for me, anyway, are Joe's Garage Acts I, II, and III, Hot Rats, and Just Another Band From L.A.
