I'm traveling from alaska to minnesota and I'm wondering if a passport is required? Is it possible to pass through without a passport (i.e. if i have a valid drivers liscence and social security card)?

If you are taking a flight from Alaska to Minnesota, you do not need a passport, just your valid drivers license (photo I.D.); unless you are making a stop in Canada.

If you are driving, therefore passing through Canada, you do not need a passport, but you DO need a photo I.D. (Drivers license) and proof of citizenship, most people use either a passport or a certified copy of their birth certificate.

A Social Security Card is not valid as proof of citizenship or of identification, and will not be accepted as such.

The key to answering your question is wether you are flying and if your cruise ends to begins in Vancouver. If you are flying into or out of Vancouver, BC, Canada then yes you do need to have a passport. If your cruise is departing from Seattle, Washington or your cruise departs or disembarks from Vancouver, BC, Canada and you are either driving or using another form of ground transportation like Amtrak or a bus line to get to/from the ship then no you will not need a passport. This can be confirmed on the state departments passport information page that I have linked below. Passports will not be needed for land and sea travel between Canada & Mexico (and other nearby countries) until the Summer of 2008. Air travel to any other country does require a passport.

not unless you are going to be going to canada. Alaska and Minnesota are both part of the USA. just need valid driver's license or other picture ID.
