I was kinda wondering the same thing. I got a membership as part of the purchase of an '06. I found the two magazines to be enjoyable. I don't belong to the local H.O.G., for the same reasons others don't. (see above) The free tow (once only) sounds nice, but I don't need it. I've always managed to get my bike off the road by myself. I could get cheaper through my insurance, but since I got the extended warranty, I also got road hazard. I don't remember getting a map, maybe I did. I have no clue where the pin is, the patch keeps turning up in the living room(?). So, for my $45 renewal fee, I get a patch and a pin that I don't wear and a map of places I don't go. That's a pretty expensive subscription to two magazines that only come out six times a year and don't have all that much to say.

I'm both a National HOG member and a member of my local chapter. There are several officers as well as safety and road captains, an activities director, a merchandise director and others. We have 85 members in our local chapter of all ages and both genders. They come from all walks of life and backgrounds. No one frowns upon another due to age or riding ability. In fact, our novice riders are given extra attention when it comes to developing their riding skills. Safety is first and foremost, so we want all members to be able to ride to the best of their ability. We encourage all members to take the MSF courses. Many have taken both the basic and advanced courses more than once. We have good times on and off the road. This weekend we're going on a three day trip to York & Gettysburg, PA. In York we will tour the Harley plant and then on to Gettysburg to visit the historic sites. We also do a lot of charity rides and fund raisers. I think the National Membership is $45 and our local chapter membership is $10. So, for $55 you can try it for a year and if you don't like it don't renew. But I'd recommend you at least give it a try. You won't know if you don't try.

Just joining National HOG is only a requirement for joining your local HOG group...there are some benefits to joining national hog...but I don't know anyone who's ever needed them....once you join a local chapter you'll find that the club has it's own system of help that's available to it's members...Our club has a emergency tow list....which is nothing more than a list of members that either have a p/u truck or a motorcycle trailer...if you break down, they come get your butt and your bike off the street....for free.
One of the members of my local club recently told us all a story that happened to him....he was traveling with a buddy in Virginia and got a flat tire on the rear...naturally he was miles from anyplace that could help....he contacted the local HOG group and Identified himself as a member of a Local HOG group out of Massachusetts and asked for help....they sent a guy out with a trailer and picked him up and then drove them to their local HD shop....he tried to pay the guy for his time and gas....but he wouldn't take it.....all he said was...I might need help in Ma. someday and I'm sure your group or another will be there for me too....Ya know what?....he's right.
Go check out our site.. www.southshorehog.net and if your ever out this way and need ANYTHING, please feel free to call anyone of us.

My wife and I belonged for a few years and it was OK. But many of the members had way more money than we do and it got kind of expensive hanging out with them. The rides and state rallies were lots of fun. I didn't like the idea of having to pay the national organization for the right to belong to the local chapter. Go check out the local chapter and see what you think. Have fun with your ultra, I have a 96.

i don't ride a HD but my buddy does. when we rode to sturgis this last august he had a flat tire. he called HOG and they had a flatbed there within an hour. the HOG membership paid for the the tow which was $100. the membership cost $35 so if anything it will pay for itself if anything happens on the road.

dont waste your money,I use to be a mamber of HOG and found all they do is sit around and whine,You dont need a group like that when you could be out riding, you dont gain anything from being a member, just a silly pin, patch, and a road atlas, which is the only thing worth keeping.

I used to belong, and there are pro's and cons to it like everything , went on 1 group ride with them and it was a brunch ride, the ride was about 100 miles and it was a good ride but the restaurant we stopped at was way to expensive for my taste...but on the other hand they have some good benefits,so yeah maybe you should try it for a year and see if you like it.......it's not for every Harley owner..good luck!
