I went to school at Cal, and I was at the Cal-Tenn game yesterday. But I still have to say, yes. The SEC is the best overall, BUT, the difference is not as big as SEC fans have been trying to convince everyone that it is. The SEC is the best, and the Big-12 North is a joke. Those two things will NEVER change, no matter what. And now, it's obvious that Big Ten is way overrated.
Pac-10 is the 2nd best conference, mainly because of USC, Cal, and UCLA. And we'll see what Oregon can do about a really pissed off Michigan team. If the Ducks can prove themselves, they can become a good solid team.
The Big-12 South is by itself the 3rd best conference, and if they had a good 2nd division, they might have ranked higher, and don't give me any of the Nebraska crap, my mom and her friends can beat Nevada.
That leaves the ACC and the Big East... two good conferences, but the bottom-dwellers in both of those conferences make them drop a little. So, overall, here are the rankings, in my opinion.
1. SEC
2. Pac-10
3. Big-12 (only b/c of the South, if the North was better, they'd at least tie the Pac-10).
4. Big-10
5. Big East
6. ACC
I want to include the WAC, b/c of the best teams in the conference, but the rest of them are so bad, I'm just going to avoid them.

I can't believe that DJ K believes that SEC fans pull for other SEC teams. That is one of the most incorrect statements I have ever heard. Half my family likes an SEC team and half my family likes a Big 10 team. The side of the family that likes the SEC roots against each and every SEC team every week, unless they are playing a Pac-10 team. The Big 10 side always roots for the Big 10 teams so their team looks better when they beat them. So you are completely incorrect is saying that statement.
However, I believe this is a stupid argument about which conference is better because the only way to tell would be to do something like college basketball does with the ACC/Big 10 tourny and that will not happen anytime soon. Bowl records are not too fair an assesment because a lot can happen in the month in between the end of the regular season and the bowl game.

Alabama, Florida, LSU, Georgia, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt and Kentucky.. grand total.. 4 losses and a lot of wins.. most are even ranked.. that's 7 out of 12 total teams.. and the lesser teams Tennessee (two tough losses and a mauling at hands of Florida), Miss St (two tough losses to LSU and Auburn) and South Carolina (2 losses to Georgia and Vanderbilt).. then there's Arkansas who just sucks.. so 1 team out of 12 that isn't good.. this year SEC could have 8 bowl teams.. best conference by far top to bottom! to the guy just above me... LSU Played Auburn on the road and won a really awesome game.. and Ole Miss is 3-1 and lead the league in Passing Offense and a few other categories.. but fact is.. Ariz St was supposed to "murder" Georgia.. didn't happen.. only UCLA beat a sorry Tennessee team with a QB who couldn't complete a sentence... how many conferences still have undefeated teams? Pac-10? ACC? Big East? Big 10? Big 12? Penn St is saving the Big 10 and the Big 12 hasn't really got deep into conference play yet (games like Red River Shootout will start being elimination games much like the SEC is having)

well obviously every conference is strong at the top. however when you look at depth the SEC is the best. It's hard to say this early but perrenially the SEC is the toughest conference and with teams like Florida, LSU, Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama your always going to be tough imagine if you had to play in the Swamp, Death Valley, and Between the Hedges all in the same year, to win one would be a feat but to win the SEC you would probably have to get them all. Here's my list of the perrenially best conferences:
1) SEC
2) Big 10
3) Pac 10
4) ACC (down a bit lately but Miami, FSU, GT, and VaTech)
5) Big 12
6) Big East
7) Conference USA
8) MAC
9) WAC

If you are an SEC fan, i think the answer is yes. If you are a college football fan, the answer is no. All conferences are pretty much the same layout. Each have their share of powerhouses and cellar dwellers and up and coming teams, surprise stories and whatnot. Unless there is a week or two that matches up two different conferences, there is no way of really knowing. The SEC is unique in the fact that fans of their teams pull for other teams in their conference. You dont see that in the others. Could you imagine an Ohio State fan pulling for Michigan or vice versa. Oklahoma pulling for Nebraska and Texas??? Miami pulling for Va Tech......

From top to bottom, yes. Meaning they have to play their best each and every conference game because any SEC team could beat mostly any other SEC on any given week.

Yes, simply stated. As to the mention of, pulling for your opponent, of course I do, and you should too. I wish for my team to not just win, but defeat real teams, thats what makes and vilidates a championship team. My team should be the best because they play and conquer the best. What does it prove to beat the worst, the losers of the sport. Did that sink in with those Ohio State fans out there.
