Somebody asks this question every day! AND IT'S NOT THE FRIGGIN' REDS!!!!!
Yes, Cincinnati had the frist professional team in 1869, but the current Reds are the 4th incarnation, established in 1892.
Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates and the Boston Red Caps (aka Atlanta Braves) are the only remaining teams from the 1876 incorporation of the National League. Teams like the Reds, Cardinals, etc. left for the American Association and other starter leagues in the 1880s, only to return in 1892 when those other leagues folded, or like the AA became a minor league.
Those 1869 Reds moved to Boston kicked a round for a few years and eventually caught on to a new rival league in 1901, called the American League. What happened to them after that is anyone's guess! LOL

Chelsea, if you take out the part about changing names in your statement, then you are correct. But if you check the baseball almanac page that pricehillsaint listed a couple answers up, you will see the Cubs were once the Chicago Orphans, Colts, & White Stockings (the White Sox were also the White Stockings at one point.. don't ask). But they have been in the same city of Chicago longer than anyone else. If you check the Phillies, they have had the same name in the same city the longest.. "The Philadelphia Phillies are the longest standing same-named, same-city team in American professional sports, having been born to the National League in 1883."
