And conversely too, have you ever been in a car accident and wish that you had used your car horn as possible means of prevention?

My boyfriend and I are in debate over car horns- I think they are necessary- I use mine we I see an accident about to happen to try to get another driver's attention. He thinks they are "uncivilized", that using mine will "get me shot one day", and that the "stare down" method is just as effective.

Uh, no, the "stare-down" doesn't work unless you already have the other guy's attention - in which case he is already bonkers and that's when you're more likely to be shot giving him the evil eye.

Absolutely I have used it - cars not stopping at stop signs, not looking before pulling out, not yielding the right of way, changing lanes without checking blind spots, and on and on (often with a cell phone covering one side of his/her face). You have to be twice as vigilant to make up for the idiots and the inexperienced out there.

I've used my horn a whole bunch of times; usually to alert another driver who is backing up without looking (like in parking lots). As far as being "uncivilized"? Nope..they are a necessary item (and, in fact, are mandated by vehicle laws in every State). Staring at someone is more likely to get you shot, knifed and/or beaten than using the horn (at least you're inside a metal cocoon..) Thanks for asking. Good luck (and tell your b/f he's full of baloney!).

I have stopped cars from hitting me by sounding my horn.
