Because every living thing is made up of cells. Plus, every part of our body is made up of cells. Each organ, blood vessel, and inch of skin is only there because cells congregate to make these structures possible.

The cell is the basic unit of life. It can carry out all the characteristics of a living organism. Cells are made of chemicals both organic and inorganic. These chemicals cannot carry out the living process alone so they are considered non-living. DNA and the virus are basically chemicals that have the ability to replicate under certain conditions. DNA in a test tube will not replicate unless it has the raw materials and proper enzymes to allow it to occur. The virus needs a living cell to replicate. Even though we contain atoms, its the way the atoms are joined and the energy flowing through them will dictate if a material is living or not.

because your body and every other living thing/organ is made up of cells. they are the building blocks of life (aka basic unit). an analogy would be an atom to a molecule or any other object. the atom is the smallest you can go and still be an element. a cell is the smallest you can go and stll have something living.

today, all cells come from previously existing cells. (almost) all living things are made up of cells. unless you count viruses and prions as living, cells are the smallest objects capable of 'living'.
