Thanks to AA women are no longer treated like 3rd class citizens not worthy of having a career. Thanks to AA women are now doctors, lawyers, and engineers.

r1b1c* (below) No. I meant America. Thanks for the education though as I know it is sincere.
Consider this: We call ALL copiers Xerox Machines. EVen though Werox is merely a company name. WHate we have done my friend is called "Branding". The term America has been "branded" and suggest the US of America.

ruth (below) Great false premise!
When did an AA rep force you into pursuing a career? Was it at gunpoint or some other form of coercion?

Glen B (below) - "discriminates against qualified candidates" -
Totally disagree. AA does allow qualified women to fill positions that they were once denied. If five qualified people apply for one position, four will not get it with or without AA. AA simply says, "You've denied qualified women this opportunity for decades. So now you must accept a qualified woman.

Today's women are doctors, lawyers, engineers AND MOTHERS.
Which job do you consider the hardest? Which one is the most important? How would you like to have both?!
I do not really thank AA for the heavy responsibilities I have to carry as a woman. But thanks for asking.
ADDED: Read the last sentence again. No premise. Just my opinion as a female attorney/single mom. Men need to grow up. JMO. I knew I had to work, so I went to law school. AA had nothing to do with any of it!

The glass ceiling still exists for many women.
I don't know if it made America more sexist but it certainly enabled some women to perform "other" jobs than previously before.
Also, consider how affirmative action effectively discriminates against qualified candidates as well because of the quota system.
Edit; Some companies have a quota system. Say the company still lacks 2-4 women to meet those requirements. 4 jobs open up and two of the positions need to be filled by women. 2 women apply, hs education, 5 years work experience, both. Now 8 men apply, all with college degrees, but only 2 years work experience. And it's indicated that all 8 men are more qualified than the 2 women but due to meeting requirements the men are not chosen. That's discrimination.
Edit; Chi, I already said this, "but it certainly enabled some women to perform "other" jobs than previously before." That's not the point I was arguing.

AA is where a position goes to the minority even if they are not the most qualified. That's descrimination. AA is wrong.
If you want equality, that's fine, you get equality. But that means you must compete with no special consideration, just your qualifications.
You can not shout for equality in one breathe and then turn around and ask to be treated special in the next. Make your choice, special but not equal, or equal and not special. Once it's made, stick with it.

That's a pile of garbage and you know it. The women's suffrage movement existed long before affirmative action was a gleam in a Supreme Court justice's eye, and I don't recall the feminist movement having anything to do with AA either. You're just looking for excuses to justify hand outs and preferential treatment.

You mean the United States not America.
They are not the same thing.
America = Continent with 37 nations
United States = One of those nations

America has become more sexist...men are mostly rude now...and it removed legal barriers placed before women. The trouble was that denying rights to women was legal and was practiced.

While there has been a sexist, discriminatory backlash and retrenchment of misogynistic religion barriers have been removed but there is still much to do.
