Courage is the ability to discern whether a given threat requires action or endurance. It is the virtue that seeks to preserve the greatest good in the face of the greatest evil.

Courage is halfway between recklessness and cowardice. The coward allows his life to be governed by fear, whereas the reckless man does not even acknowledge fear or danger and takes unnecessary chances. Neither of these is a healthy disposition. Halfway between them is courage, by which we acknowledge danger but subordinate our fears to the pursuit of the greater good.

A good example of courage is that of Blessed Damien of Molokai (aka "Damien the Leper"). Father Damien went to Hawaii as a missionary priest in 1864. In 1873, he learned that the leper colony of Molokai was in need of a priest, and he volunteered to go there. He lived on the island, among the lepers, and tended to their needs. In 1889, he died of leprosy. Surely he knew that he would run that risk when he volunteered for the assignment at Molokai, but he kept his fears in check and looked toward the greater good: the spiritual care of the people of Molokai.

The innate or thought out will to go on in spite of pain or other seeming insurmountable adversity. Everyone starts out with courage;I think it is innate (in other words instinctual like curiosity or the will to persevere).

An example of courage to stress my points is the will to sit up when a wee baby followed by the will to stand and walk. Courage is shown by all babies when they keep on trying in spite of often falling over or falling down attended usually with some pain. The old song phrase, "Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start all over again." expresses these children's courage and perseverance. They succeed because they are able to even run and skip in a short time.

Why do we sometimes lose this innate trait? Good luck, good health, peace and love!

I don't really think it can be described into simple pretty words that be put in the defination like a common little noun. It's so many things and is shown in too many ways to even begin with trying to explain it, is it not?
Strength, i guess could summerize it, but to no justice.

Courage is...
... not losing hope when everything seems hopeless.
... standing up for your convictions when doing so endangers your life.
... knowing that you are a human being in a society of humans, with all their faults and limited ways to think and - continuing to live.
.... being able to admit to yourself that you were wrong, and doing better the next time.

The ability to accept we are flawed. To be able to stand up for your beliefs, even in the face of adversity. Not to run away from our mistakes. To defend the weak. To protect our young. To die without fear.xxx
