I know what you mean. Technique is important, but it's not enough to have good technique in order to win. I see some wonderful (especially younger) dancers not winning a competition and not even getting close to winning just because they look like they don't expect to win. It shows in tiny details, like where their eyes are - looking straight ahead or looking to the side sometimes, stuff like that. People don't even realize when they're doing it. While their technique is really good.
See if you can find a private lesson specifically on the subject of performance skills. Some teachers are better at it than other. Ask around.

Even though you have good technique, you have to show that you really want those special parts in your performances! One of the first secrets that I have ever learned was to enjoy what I was doing and the people around me even if I didn't like the people, or didn't feel comfortable in my surroundings. Also you have to surprize your teachers by doing things that they wouldn't expect from you. Ex. lifting your leg up higher in a develope or staying up in releve for a few royal seconds after a pirouette. Hope This Helps!

take more classes
practice, practice, and practice
talk to your dance teacher
take gymnastics
If i think of anything else, I'll add it.
I hope this helped!

If your kind of shy, that might be the reason because entergetic people usually get picked for stuff like this because they're not afraid of crowds. Maybe dance is just your part-time thing. Maybe you could try learning an instrument too or something.

You need to work on your technique and stage presence. What ever dance you choose to do break it down in steps. Do your routine out of sequence. Then walk through the entire routine. Do not dance the routine, walk it out.

Next dance your whole routine out in front of a mirror. Check all your angles, levels and make sure you are following through on your steps. Exaggerate your routine. Make it big not sloppy just bigger movements. You will then start to realize that you own your routine and that you will use more of the stage to dance. Take control of the audience by playing to them. Feel the music instead of just moving to the beat.

i agree with the first answer....except that you can't just LOOK at dances on the internet and get better. you have to practice things. youtube is like...the most useful sight in the world. you can look up dance instructional videos where proffessional dancers will teach you a routine step by step. or you can look up dance solos, and learn the dances in moderation according to what YOU can do... and then practice those. you could also take a musical theatre class. but if you're anything like me....you'll hate it.

two little secrets:
smile! teachers love smiles. not big cheesy ones but genuine, "i love what i'm doing" ones. smiling will immediately get you brownie points w/ any teacher.
also, show as much dedication as possible. show up early to class and always look at the teacher when they explain things to show that you are paying attention. there was a girl at my dance school who was not very good but kept advancing because she signed up for all the classes she could and rarely ever missed one.

You must work for it. Act out everything you do, with emotion. Make every class you take, a performance. Don't just look at people and say, "Gee, I wish I was them..." Say girl, I am gonna be them...Work, girl. If you really want this, youd do anything, anything. Remind yourself how wonderful you are, but you can't just lean on that, you have to move forward. Good luck! Have fun with it! And WORK! (:

First rule.. work on your TECHNIQUE!
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE competition, but you might have to put on fake expressions and work on those tricks, too.

Some people aren't comfortable putting on faces in class, in front of everyone.
Some people aren't comfortable putting on faces at competition, in front of the judges and audience.
Some people just don't know how to put on the right face.
*practice in front of a mirror while listening to the music
*then, bring it to the classroom
*last, bring it ONN at competition

Keep in mind that flexibility will help a lot, so work on that if you need to

good luck =]

ok..so this is gonna sound cheesy...but im pretty sure it works...if you know that u've taken as much lessons as u can...and practiced a lot...then the last thing u need to remember is to let ur confidence shine through wen u dance...even just having a smile while you dance will make people want to look at you..!
