maximum automobiles have a low coolant point located on the overflow container. The decrease the fluid the extra resistance. The Engine Coolant Temperature sensor measures the temperature in line with resistance of coolant. the warmer the coolant, the fewer resistance. The ECT sensor is many times located on thermostat housing.

The temperature sensor sends a constant signal to the computer about the varying engine temperature a temp sender usually does one of two things for a light it is either off normal temp or on overheated, or for a gage it will send a signal like a sensor that will vary the gages position to correspond with the engine temp.

Temperature sending unit tells the "gage" what the engine temperature is.
A temperature sensor is basicaly a switch that is either on or off and generaly controls the emissions controls, or idiot lights.
