my doc told me my blood test showed that my son could have spina biffida that i needed an amnio to rule that out and i did it and turned out he was perfectly fine but i will never take that blood test again because i have read and heard doctors say that they give false postives more than they are actually right results and they just scare the mothers and fathers. so i will never take that test again because i was scared and had to wait for results for 4 weeks and worried for nothing it was not worth it because i was keeping him regardless of what was wrong so i will never take that test again...but you do what makes you feel better!

Well, the odds of introducing a problem are 1/200. Have you been through the genetic counseling?
When we had our 2nd son, my wife was 35 (which has a roughly 1/200 chance of DS), and we went with the genetic counseling to get a better idea of our specific risk. That made it roughly 1/8000, so we elected not to.
If your 1/246 is after genetic counseling, the math says don't do it, but just barely. Essentially you have a *slightly* better chance to introduce a problem than there already being one. It all comes down to you and your peace of mind. If you *have* to know, then you have to know.
But if you haven't done the genetic counseling, do so. It will give you a much less "ballpark" feel for the odds of DS.
However you decide, good luck!

My doctor told me the deal. He said it all depends on whether you would abort if the baby had birth defects. If you didn't plan on it, then you don't need to have the amnio, because it increases the chance that you could go into labor, and you are too early. I told him I wouldn't abort so it didn't matter if the test came back positive, we wouldn't do it. Although later, he wanted me to have it at the very end to make sure her lungs were developed. We had to induce so she wouldn't get caught (almost 10 lbs 2 weeks early) and it was ok by then if it caused labor. I hated having it but There were no bad things that happened. I'd prefer to not have it for my next child, but each baby is getting bigger and bigger and they have to make sure the lungs are developed.

I wouldn't do it. There is a risk of losing the baby when you have an amnio. If you aren't going to abort anyway then it really doesn't matter. The doctor would know what to look for on ultrasound and if he thinks everything is ok, then I'm sure it is. Good luck!

If the Dr feels you can skip the test and you and your husband are going to have the baby anyway regardless of the outcome of the amnio then do not so it. after the amnio, you have an increased chance of miscarriage and since the baby is welcome in your life either which way, you don't need to worry about the amnio.

does it matter if the baby is going to have ds?
i personally wouldn't do the amnio because to me it woudltn' matter if the baby had ds or was "normal" it would be my baby to love and cherish.
there is a slight risk of miscarriage with the amnio which i am sure you know and all the other risks.
iw ould say don't do it. what does it matter?

often the downs amnios are wrong. i know two women who got false positives and were absolutely devastated and went thru about four more weeks of feeling so sad and helpless before they had further testing and it turned out to be negative. i wouldn't do it because it wouldn't matter to me whether or not my baby had down's, i'd still love him or her like crazy. would you really have an abortion if you had a baby with down's?

i personally wouldn't do the amino. it is dangerous to the baby. if the doctor isn't concerned then you shouldn't be either. even if you have a ds baby it is not the end of the world they too can grow up to lead almost normal lives and hey who is completely normal these days anyways. also i was told that you had to be 18 weeks to get that test done maybe that is why the results weren't accurate.

i think it is best to do what your doctor says because when it comes to unborn babies they know whats best i hope that you dont have a downs syndrome baby but in the end it is your child and im sure you will love him/her with all your world whether there is something wrong or not good luck to you and just listen to your doctor

I wouldn't want to be kept in the dark. I would want to know for sure. I had that test and it hurt like hell. That needle was the longest I'd seen in my life. But you have to take sacrifices when you are bringing someone into the world, and pain is one of them. Do the test, give yourself and your husb piece of mind.
