While all the things you have already down is a good start there still could and probably are, a great many files on your hard drive which can slow down your system. Also, when you remove software fragments get left behind in the Registry. This also slows a computer.

There is a great tool you can obtain for free called crap cleaner, or CCleaner. It is a good tool to use in conjunction with your system Disk Clean tool. First use CCleaner then use Disk Clean. You can obtain CCleaner here:

http:www.cnet.com/downloads

In the upper right corner is a search box, just put in CCleaner and hit search or go, or whatever termonology the site is currently using to initiate a site search. A page will appear with several simular tools, just scroll down til you see CCleaner and click on it.

Go ahead and read as many reviews as you feel like. Most everyone rates this tool very highly. Once you determine it will be of use to you go ahead and download and iinstall. Once installed you can follow the link to the Online help files, but it is easy to use. It also takes up very little room on your hard drive, so no worries about adding to the clutter with this tool.

Not only is CCleaner a tool to rid your system of unwanted files, it is a Registry cleaner, a Cookie manager (you can select to keep cookies you use and delete the rest) a software removal tool, which works far better than Windows Add/Remove applet, a Startup manager where you can easily delte items which start at boot, which can drastically slow boot time.

After you use CCleaner then use your Disk Clean tool to finish up. Go to Start-All Programs-Accessories-System Tool-Disk Cleanup. Run the tool. Now, a few items you will not wish to remove unless you have your original Office CD: Your Office files which are used to repair any issues which arise. If these files are not located on your hard disk you have to pop in your oginal Office disk any time you need to repair or otherwise do maintainance of your Office applications. It is easiest when they reside on the hard disk, but if you are worried about them taking up too much room and have the CD available, then it may behoove you to delete them. Click on any item you wish to see a decription of, it will show up at the bottom of the page. Once you have selected everything you wish to delete then go ahead and run the tool. One further suggestion: Go through your Recycle Bin to reasure yourself that you are not deleting anything you wish to keep. If you find something you want, right click and select--Restore. Be sure to do this before you run CCleaner, and uncheck the box in front of this item in CCleaner unless you are sure you can remember to check the Bin before running the tool each week, month, or whichever period of time you choose between runs.

Also: Make sure you understand what each box means before running the CCleaner tool. You can wipe out your Frequent docs, your run list, your browser saved user names and passwords, your list of frequently opened files in your Office apps, and other informational boxes in web forms, etc. Just read the instructions and you will be provided with decriptions of each of these items. It really is very easy to use.

Now, I don't wish to alarm you but drastic slow downs can be a sign of infection. I encourage you to do a full scan with your Anti-Virus application, if using CCleaner and Disk Cleanup fails to make any diffference. If your scan shows up any infections allow it to do its job and delete or quaranteen anything neccasary. If there is any infection your app can't handle, there are plenty of vollunteers who help those with infected system Online. They usually use a tool called HijackThis, and it takes a little work but they will walk you through what you need to do. Just do not run the HijackThis tool on your own as many system files and services can be wiped out on accident. There are several steps but if you take them one by one you can be back up and running in no time at all.

I hope this helps, just take a deep breath and know that there isn't anything that can't be fixed. If you wish go ahead and take your system to a reputalbe repair shop. Use a smaller company as these seem to give more quality care than the much larger companies. Good luck and have a nice remainder of your holiday weekend.

Do a search then download and run a free spyware program such as superantispyware (one word) and spybot search and destroy ( can find both on http://www.download.com ). As a computer repairman i guarantee it will work. .... A spyware program is rarely alone on a computer: an affected machine can rapidly be infected by many other components. Users frequently notice unwanted behavior and degradation of system performance. A spyware infestation can create significant unwanted CPU activity, disk usage, and network traffic, all of which slow the computer down. Stability issues, such as application or system-wide crashes, are also common. Spyware which interferes with networking software commonly causes difficulty connecting to the Internet.

You need to check if you lately download music, files, photos, or installed a new software that is taking Ram memory.

If it is a PC check for updates of viruses, if it is a Mac go for a new ram memory.

If you are running too many programs at the same time in a Pc, well that's the lovely part of pc's. In a Mac usually that doesn't matter, so for the second better take it to the expert.

Hit ctrl, alt, delete

open task manager click processes tab check if any programmes running in background are taking up all the memory.

also, go to run type msconfig in the startup tab uncheck everything that doesn't need to run all the time so it uses less processes and therefore runs quicker

also right click on my computer , select properties and increase your paging file size. this is your virtual memory. If you are unsure about this google it.

ype into google 'windows registry repair pro' this program gets rid of everything that makes your computer run slow, and ALWAYS check for spyware after each use of using your computer!

Also, if you aren't going to use your BIG games in a while uninstall them, and when you want to use them again, install them again.

Clean Up Your Desktop To Speed Up Your Computer
My desktop on my computer was like my desk - cluttered! Having a clean desktop is important enough that Windows XP now asks you to clean up unused desktop icons. If you have always ignored the prompt like I used to, you can either clean them up manually by right clicking your mouse on them and selecting delete or you can access the Windows XP program.

* Start
* Control Panel
* Double-click "Display".
* Click the "Desktop" tab.
* Click the "Customize Desktop" button at the bottom.
* Click the "General" tab.
* Click the "Clean Desktop Now" button at the bottom.

# Get rid of Spyware. Lots of computers have Spyware and don't even know it. Some of the warning signs include:

* computer running extremely slow for no apparent reason

* computer has been taking you to websites that you don't want to go to

* you get pop-ups even when you're not on the Internet.

If your computer has any of these symptoms, you are likely to be infected with Spyware. Some of the best solutions include AdAware SE and SpyBot Search and Destroy.

# Streamline MSCONFIG. Many computers have unnecessary programs running in the background which can cause a huge decrease in performance. You can use a utility called MSCONFIG to turn off unnecessary Start Up items that are
robbing your system of memory and processing power.

To run MSCONFIG, click on the Start Menu and click on run. In the run dialog box, type msconfig and press "ok".

# Uninstall unused programs and files. Let's face it. After a while, there are a number of programs and files that we simply don't use anymore. Give your computer a
performance boost and get rid of them.

To delete programs completely, you must first go to the Control Panel and click on Add or Remove Programs.

# Run disk clean up. Disk clean up can be found by going to the start menu, to programs, accessories, system tools and then clicking on Disk Cleanup.

# If you're running Windows XP, turning off the fancy graphics will cause a noticeable increase in the speed up your computer. First, go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, System. You may need to "Switch to Classic Mode" to see the System applet.

Next, go to the Advanced tab. Click on the Settings button under Performance.

Select the "Adjust for best performance" radio button. Click Apply and then OK. The graphics aren't as slick, but your computer will run a lot faster.

there are two main reasons for a slow computer, one is viruses and stuff like that and the other is you just have a lot of programs running. If you are in situation 1 then you should do system restore which is a computer option in your start menu. system restore explains itself. It restores your computer to an earlier date i think up to 3 months back.

So on your start menu you go to all programs, under programs then its accessories then system tools, and then system restore and this is only in xp and vista i think.
