Why not sign up for martial arts classes. The thing is to select the right school. Mnay school focus on the art and practice things that are not practical. Because of this I suggest the following arts for self defence. Krav maga, kajukenbo, brazilian jujitsu, muy thai, arnis/escrima. Other memorable mentions are boxing. That is about it. Other martial arts are good but the focus and training methodology is lacking.

The fact of the matter is that real fight are fast and furious and simpl,e techniques work better than complex techniques. Reaction is slower than action so elaborate blocking usually does not work. This is different than going to a torunament where there are rules and the focus is to win not to survive. Survival is a different thing. In a ring you can always give up or tap out and the referee will sterp in and stop the fight. Also, there may be medical attention close by. In a street fight you simply don't know what you are going to get. You may be dealing with a psychotic rapist, a thug who is desparate for money because he/ she needs to get high or various other individuals like a jelous person who think you took their men or looked at them the wrong way. You also, don't know how thay are planning on attacking you. They may be carrying a sharp oject like knifes ot box cutters. MAybe a bunt object like a hamer, a stick or a rock in their hand or maybe they are empty handed with just fist. Then again they may have a fire arm.

First of all you have to understand the purpose of survival. The only purpose of survival is to survive. You may think "well duh!!!" but, you wouldn't belive how many people don't understand that. WHen you are in a tournament the purpose is different. You are there to win or to prove yoursleve. In a bar fight it is more survival but, there is abetter chance of making it alive because there is security in the place or so you hope. Hopefully noone will pull out a gun or a sharp obkect and satb you. However, people forget about what happens outside of the bar, The guy or girl whos a ss you just kicked is now mad and he/she may be waiting for you outside. Thats right outside with his friend with guns. Or they may be waiting around the cornner in their car. This is survival. You see in a bar fight you can try to walk away or talk your way out of it. This should always be your first choice. However, once you are outside and that person has it in their mind that they want to hurt you you are in full survival mode. Your goal is to make it out alive not fight. If you see the person is waiting for you you should call the cops. You should maybe go somewhere else etc etc.

in your situation Krav maga would had teach you how to deal with this particular type of scenario. They deal with being attacked by surprice and to survive. Again, survive not fight. They had good techniques on how to survive a knife attack and gun attacks. The thing to get out of krav maga is the right mind set and attitude on how to survive. I haven't taken any classes on krav maga but for what I have seen this is the goal. Thai boxin and boxin would had tough you not only how to punsh and kick (thai boxin) but more importantly how to get hit. How to take punishement and keep going forward. The filipino martial arts teach you how to fight with a weapon mainly a stick. By extention it teaches you how to defend against such attacks. This arts (there are many under such clasification) can also be used without weapons and are very effective. Also, playing with sticks enhances your reflexes because those stick move very fast. You react to them. There is no time to think when the stick comes at you. Brazilian jujitsu teaches you how to fight and defend yourself in the ground. This is a very important aspect that many martial arts negleck. As you have seen for yourself a lot of encounters end up in the ground either with both opponent on the ground or one standing and another on their back. This art is really good when dealing with people that are larger than you to a certain extent. I mean there is only so big of a guy you can take. Look at it this way, an 8 year old will never defeat a 220 pounds line backer. However, the ground can be a great equalizer. With good techniques you can dominate a person with little damage to you or the person.

I think in your situation you did what you could. It was a surprice attack and there is very little you can do in that situation. When you where overwelmed and where taken to the ground you protected your head and vital organs. In the long run you survive. Yes, it wasn't pretty and there are various thing you could had done to fare better but thats life. In real life it is not common to be in a situation like that and come out on top like in the movies. Especially if the person was drugged which can make them somewhat inmune to pain. That is right pain compliance as the cops call it is not always possible. This is why you sometimes see 4 or 5 cops trying to over take 1 guy.

Here are something you could had done to improved your situation in the scenario given. Note that this is all theoretical. It could work as well as it could had made things worst. Again, is self defense which is a chaotic encounter. What you do in self defense is improve your odds. This is a very different thinking from the "Oh stand there and duke it" mentality.

Ok, so your posture in any situation that is getting bad is to raise your hands. If you are still in the arguing stage then put your hand in front of youas in saying stop. This makes you look less treatening and you already have your hands almost all the way up to defend or attack if the needs be. In your scenario it is different because the person came out of nowhere. So the first thing was to always be aware of your surounding. It may give you an extra second to reackl. If the person already lunched at you then raise your hands as to protect your face kind of like a boxer stance. It doesn't have to be perfect the idea is to protect your face. Do not have your hands completely close to your face. Use your forearms to block punshed. Notice that most attackes are round attacks. So, the person was probably swinging at you. With your hands in the boxer stance you could intersept their forearms with your forearms. Again, in theory. At the same time you should strike the persons face. Goof face targets are the nose the eyes, the throat and the shin. If you have not trained your hands then hit with the palm of your hand. Look up palm strike. The palm strike is not as strong as a close fist but it is easy to do and it can prevent you from breaking your wrist. Thats right punching wrong can lead to a sprain wrist or even broken wrist. Move around a lot as you are doing this. Remember the idea is to get out of that situation. To survive. The person might get discourage or you may give them a good shot enough to give you time to run away. Again survival. There is no need to stay. What if the person pulls out a knife or a gun. Screw that. Get a few hits in or defend yourself enough to get out. Ofcourse if you get the upper hand and you can finish them off quickly and efficiently do so. Don't be a hero thoug. The goal is to eliminate the threat. Different than from winning. Nobody really wins here. Is all a matter of how bad any of the people involved get hurt. Use any force necessary. You can deal with it later in court. For example if the person grabs your by the throat then with your hands grab their face and with your thumbs push in into their eyeballs. You are defending yourself. Now, if the person is incapacitated in the ground do not kick them to kill them. Thats excesive force. Ok, lets say that the attacker was just too strong or he/she overwelmed you. That is your hand defense did not worked as planned. Chances are you will be taken to the ground. without proper training the best you can do is to always have your feet facing your oponent. Always follow them with your feet. That is you are laying on your back with at least 1 hand on the ground. More like sitting really. As the person circles you you turn too. Your knees are always between you and the attacker. If the attacker gets close enough kick them in the knees. Forget about going for the groin. Most man are used to being attacked in the groin and if you are in the ground while your attacker is standing up you do not want to do high kicks that will enable him/her to grab your leg. Just do quick jabs kicks. Your goal here is to get off the ground when ever you can and never let them get on top of you. This simple techinique would had at least prevented the attacker to kick you in the ground. Maybe you would had stalled the encounter long enough for the attacker to leave or for someone else to show up and maybe end the fight. Notice how I said encounter and not a fight. It is not a fight it is survival. Very different things. One of the worst situation is to have someone on tiop of you. This is when brazilian jujitsu would be nice to know. It teaches you how to defend and attack people from your back. Again, at least neutralise the attack long enough to have help arrive or to have the person change his or her mind about continuing the attack. What you are saying to the attacker is that you will not go down easily and you may be enough of a fight that the attacker may think that it is not worth it. Remember that most attackers are also nervous and afraid. Usually they are desperate so they want easy targets. No criminal is brave. They are all cowards who attack the easiest victims. Even serial killers are these way. Serial killers stalk their victims or at the minimum measure their victims to see how easy or hard the target is going to be. Ofcourse there are extenuating circumstances. FOr example prison. These guys in prison will go out of their way to hurt you even if you are big. But, if you are big and strong they will do it in numbers. There is no need to measure ones ability when the outcome could be death.

In a rape situation again brazilian jujitsu works well. You will learn how to control the fight from the ground or atleast defend yourself. If being raped the best thing is again to keep moving even if on the ground. kick scream and scratch the persons face. Go for the eyes. Make it hard. Put the person between your legs. Yes, it sounds counter intuitive but if you wrap your legs around the persons waist it makes it difficult for them tu punsh you. They can do things to make those punch hurt more but they for the most part do not have the full fulcrum to deliver a knock out punch. In the mean while you are grabing their wrist, shirt, clawing their face and punching them back. It is really hard to get a hard on when you are being scratch and bitten in the fore arms, and ears and somebody pokes your eyes with their fingers.

You will need to take a description of what happen, where when and what they looked like, what they done and so on to the police.

The best place to attack in defence is usually at the persons head.

Colt .45 APC

Oh wait...uhm...fat people have that fat thing and if you shoot them the bullets only get lodged in their fat and they're okay, except maybe they get hungry. Here, I got it, carry a piece of cake and when the fat cow comes at you, toss the cake at her, she'll stop to eat it so you can run away...of if you are so inclined, you can take a big rock and smash in her fat head with it.
