Well, according to Salinger's story "This Sandwich Has No Mayonnaise," where Holden's brother is agonizing over the news he's just received that Holden has been listed as MIA, he may have died in WWII.

I see him sitting in a cubicle, working at a boring job in the city, taking the same train to work everyday, going home and watching TV until it is time to go to bed. Every day is like this.

Maybe he would commit suicide. I'm not convinced that he really got very good help for his depression.
