I was playing the home edition of family feud the other night and the answers for one of the questions had both table tennis and ping pong at 2 different values.

Ping Pong is a registered trademark used for the sale of equipment. After it grew in popularity it was named "table tennis" by other manufacturers so they could sell equipment, and national organizations use the name Table Tennis as well (probably originally to disassociate from the trademark and not have to pay). So the "official" name is Table Tennis, but it is still popularly known as Ping Pong. The wikipedia article has the full history of the name. And the USATT website has a full History of Table Tennis on it's website.

Table Tennis is the competitive sport.
