How many non-smoking people would feel the pinch when their tax went up by 35%?

Just to cover the revenue lost by not selling the legal drug tobacco?

Hmm, seems like a double edged sword you've uncovered, Wonkyfella. Just to make sure others don't have to pay extra tax needlessly, I'll keep smoking! It's my duty as a responsible citizen, and to show I care for others.

Where did you come up with 35%? There is no way it is that high.

But okay, I'll play along. Just say that all this money was lost from smokers revenue.

What about all the money that would be saved in dealing with the aftermath of this selfish filthy habit, the strain on the NHS for a start. The diseases and complications that are a direct result from smoking are a major strain on the NHS and take up considerable sources. (Trust me, I know, I work in a hospital.) The money saved would MORE than cover any tax lost.

It's a disgusting, pathetic, selfish habit.

Why do smokers think they financially prop up the entire nation? They make a contribution to tax revenue like averyone else who works and buys products and services but they are by no means critical.

Explain the mathematics behind you declaration that general taxation would increase by 35%.

For the year 2005/2006 tobacco duty represented only 1.7% of total tax revenue in the UK. Small change in the grand scheme of things.

Yeah but smokers cost the NHS so much that the figures would probably balance OK without a tax rise.

I don't smoke but I do think the anti-smoking hysteria has gotten a bit out of hand. Some people seem to think you can get eye cancer from looking at them.
