Some critics maintain that this novel promotes hatred between classes of people. In what ways does it do that? In what way does the novel’s effect go beyond that?

I did not read the book but did see the movie. There was no indication anywhere to my knowledge that the novel promoted hatred between people. Insofar as I am concerned, it was a great piece of history to portray. Of course, I was born during the depression and remember some of the aftermath. It was worse really for the poor class (us). but it wasn't easy or nice for anyone.

Promotes hatred??

I think it teaches you to have compassion for people who are down on their luck; that people don't always Choose to be poor. It also is a good history lesson.

Walk in the other guys shoes before judging is what it taught me.
