What can the guy do... he has no money for an attorney to sue the bully.

Did the criminal get arrested? Prosecuted?

Was the victim covered by medical insurance? If so, his insurance company might do the suing.

If there were any witnesses, the bully is in big trouble. Even if the bully was verbally provoked or something, the law takes a dim view of people resorting to violence, and often dole out lavish awards to the victim.

First, he should contact a lawyer who specializes in these cases. Keeping in mind the lawyer often gets as much as 30%, he should set his sights high. If his bills cost $80,000, he should accept no less than three times that amount.

The lawyer will work on a contingency basis. That means, he does not require payment up front for his services, but he'll take a whopping 20-30% of the settlement. This is actually not such a bad arrangement because it means the lawyer has to win the case to get paid.

If the bully has no money, the judge can order that money be deducted from his paychecks each month. They can also force him to sell assets to cover the costs.

Number one, that is not a bully. Bullies are twelve year old kids who push down other twelve year old kids and laugh about it. You don't need a lawyer to file a police report, unless retardation is coming into play, and in that case, LOL!

Seriously, if you don't have enough money to buy a lawyer, then you don't have enough money for the medical bills. File bancrupcy and a police report. You can do that in the same day. That's how wonderful America is.

And if you can't swallow that, then go talk to a lawyer to see if he'll take your case pro-bono or if you can sue for more than your medical bills cost so you can pay for the lawyer.

He should be able to secure an attorney with no money...the attorney would just get 20-30% of whatever the settlement is. Mind you, if the guy who beat him up has no money, then he would never be able to collect anyway.

If he qualifies for Legal Aid he can sue without cost or next to nothing depending on his previous salary.
He can take the guy to court and be is own lawyer.
He can get legal advice from lawyers, some give half hour free. At least it will give him ideas

He should see an attorney anyway. Ask if the attorney does initial consultation without cost. Some do. If his case is good enough, the attorney may take it on contingency.

Why didn't the Police put the guy in jail and force him to pay for the medical bills?
