Could be that the mechanic forgot to reset the check engine light. My Jetta did this after my 50000 mile check up. It came on at 50000 to tell me to get the car checked, and after I had it checked, it stayed on because the mechanic forgot to reset it for the next 50000 miles

If he was a good mechanic he would hook up a little code finder machine to your car and it would tell him exactly what the problem was. Get a second opinion. It could be a sensor or vaccum leak.

get a new mechanic. it could be your smog filter - which in that cause does not damage your engine... have the new mechanic hook up a computer to read the error code that is being produced by your car.

it could be a problem with the wiring of your car which would be causing the false lighting of your "check engine" light

go to auto zone and have them run the diagnostic on it. It's free and they can tell you what code is showing up and what you can do to fix it. They can reset the switch also.
