Many people are poor all their life. Not all people would claim things are great now and they are rich (not even those that remember 50 years ago). Some people have worked low paying jobs all their life. The Media pushes how great the economy is but I have meet many people who went long periods (recently & for the first time) without a job.A person with a great income will think the economy is great. Some people are stingy.

We pinch pennies because we don't want to be in the same boat we were in 50 years ago when we were poor. According to the law, my income is below the poverty line thus I am considered poor. However, I get by fine primarily because I watch how I spend my money and don't expect to live like Bill Gates. Although, I bet that nerdy looking turkey lives pretty frugally in spite of his wealth.

Because you never know when the day will come you lose everything and have to start over.

Most people that lived through the depression or who grew up knowing what poor really is knows the value of a dollar and knows that just because you have it does not mean you need to be a spend thrift.

A lot of this was with ones that went through the depression. Nothing is sure in the future, and I don't like the way things are shaping up now. So I save where I can.

After the war things were very hard to get, even with coupon books, all things were rationed.Parents teach their kids how to buy wisely.Even today's standard of living, isn't what i call the best anymore.High cost of living is almost like it was many years ago.Just look in the shopping malls, when was the last time you saw people carrying huge bags of shopping? its seldom seen now days.

Habit! I do the same thing and it is because life has taught me that you never know what is coming around the corner!!!

Plus, if people know you have money, they all want to borrow but, many do not want to repay! So, even though my house and cars are a dead giveaway...I pretend to be broke even with myself!

These are lessons in life and habits that you never, ever forget. You do not have to be "poor" to understand this and to try and instill thrift in your children.

When I asked this of my father in-law his answer fits your question. He told me that he did not want to get use to something that he would have to learn to do without.
