It depends upon your point of view, doesn't it? The founders of America were rebels to Great Britain but patriots to the Americans. The Confederates were rebels to the north and patriots to the south.

It is never we who are rebels WE are always patriots. It is always THEM who are the rebels and rarely patriots. It is all a matter of prospective.
In the American revolution we were patriots from the colonial stand point but to the British we were rebels.

Easy.
Whoever wins are Patriots.
Whoever loses are Rebels.
Had Germany won in WW II, FDR, Truman, and Churchill would have been hanged for being War Criminals.
That would have been for bombing and killing a 100,000 women & children for fun.
They knew there were no Soldiers in Dresden. It was all for Fun & Revenge.
War Criminals.
The South was fighting for Freedom from the Oppressive North, during the War of Northern Agression.
(It was not about Slavery. It was about Oppression.)
