I'm going to need to purchase a new computer soon & need a little help. What PC will give me the most for my $$? And I currently have a 17in flat widescreen monitor so I prefer same or better... (if possible) Is this a realistic budget for a quality computer? I'd appreciate some recommendations, especially if you've purchased a computer recently.
Thanks,

The best PC for what purpose(s) and are you wanting a desktop or a notebook?
Desktops can be quite inexpensive while notebooks can be very much the opposite.
For a desktop where you already have a 17" LCD you don't need to replace it unless there is a problem with it so spend your money on a machine with a minimum of 2GB RAM and memory upgrade options, a 100GB hard drive and a high quality video card with at least 128MB of memory (not shared memory).
If you're looking for something else then you need to edit your question and be more specific.

I just got my new desktop with 20-inch widescreen flat panel monitor from dell and it cost me just under $1000 with the $300 sale off they have right now.
The specs:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 5600+
(2.8GHz, 2000MHz FSB, and a 2MB L2 cache)
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz
320GB Serial ATA Hard Drive 7200RPM
Windows Vista Home Premium
Dell 20 inch Widescreen Digital Flat Panel
16x DVD+/-RW Drive
256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT-DDR3
Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio
Dell Bluetooth Wireless Media Hub 13-1 Media Reader w/Bluetooth 2.0 EDR
802.11b/g wireless PCI card
Hope that helps give you an idea.

with a thousand you can get soo much! You get a super computer. Dell would be best if you have little knowledge of computers, otherwise i would build one. CompUSA has great deals. Just make sure to get intel core duo 2 or AMD x2 for a processor. For memory get at least 2gb ddr2 especially for vista. Make sure a video card is included for video playback and games. Theres usually at least a flat panel monitor with a $600+ computer. Absolutely no CELERONS!

Why spend $1000 if you can get what you need for $300 or $500?
First, determine what you want to do, then buy accordingly. Unnecessary bells and whistles = throwing money down the toilet.

Dell has desktops starting at 349 without Monitor, 549 with, a little tweeking with memory (I agree with the 2g recommendation) and with the HD 80-120G at least. HP probably has similar offerings.

well I can't afford to test it, but id say the absolute best desktop you could get for under $1000, qualtity wise, is this one
http://shop.sun.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/Sun_NorthAmerica-Sun_Store_US-Site/en_US/-/USD/ViewStandardCatalog-Browse?CategoryName=Sun_Blade_2500_Work&CategoryDomainName=Sun_NorthAmerica-Sun_Store_US-SunCatalog
it doesn't come with a monitor but it is $895 so you have some more room in your budget. the specs aren't that high but it is made by sun which is famous for quality, and it can have up to 8gb of ram. but really, very few people need that kind of computing power. if I were you I would get a nice cheap dell with xp or ubuntu and spend the money I saved on a new lens for my camera.

If you want the same monitor I would recommend keeping it, you'll save a couple hundred dollars.
