Simplify: |√(7)-7| - |-5|

I have the answer [-√(7) + 2] but must understand how to get the answer, please help!

7>1, therefore √(7) < 7 and |√(7)-7| = 7 - √(7)
|-5| = 5

Thus, |√(7) - 7| - |-5| = 7 - √(7) - 5 = 2 - √(7) or as you've written:
-√(7) + 2
