I posted this a while ago but it got cut before I got back. Tanx for all and any help...
I got a hand me down pc and I want to upgade the RAM to 1GB. The original specs are...
K7S5A motherboard
AMD Athlon processor 1.16Ghz
NVIDIA GeForce2 mx100/200
Ms windows xp sp2
pc2100 256Mb RAM DDR/CL 2.5

There are two DDR slots and two SDR slots on this motherboard. I understand that you cannot mix DDR and SDR.
I got two pc3200 DDR 400mhz SD Ram 512Mb cards and inserted them in DDR slots one and two.
It's only reading the 512 in the DDR2 slot and so although there's a gig in there, it's only giving me 512.
Why is it not reading/recognising the other one...?
I've checked out the ram in the slots and both 512s are reading, indivually, when placed in the 2nd slot.
No sign of life from the 1st slot...(no boot when there's only a ram in the 1st slot and the 2nd slot is empty)

Is that repairable...?
Or realistically am I looking at getting a new motherboard...?
Any recommendations...

Crucial.com says...
Maximum Memory Capacity: 1024MB
Currently Installed Memory: 512MB
Available Memory Slots: 1
Number of Banks: 2
Dual Channel Support: No
CPU Manufacturer: AuthenticAMD
CPU Family: AMD Athlon(tm) Processor Model 6, Stepping 2
CPU Speed: 1160 MHz

That dual channel support spec...
Could that be it...?
Others scans have picked up the other 512 in slot 1, but say that there is "no parity" between the slots...

(tanx again...)

Both 512s are identical. Unfortunately not part of a kit and bought seperately, but identical down to make and spec...

non-ECC...?
Huh...?
Forgive my lack of experience here...
Any idea what I should be looking to change in the bios...?

I'm not mixing anything.
Both ram sticks are DDR and they're identical... and in the correct slots...

Well, as you have already deduced, your Dimm slot 1 for DDR memory is bad, the cost to repair such would be more than replacing the motherboard. Another option I don't know if you have considered, knowing that the Dimm1 slot is bad for DDR, have you considered purchasing 2 sticks of 512mg SDRam PC133 and using them instead of the DDR? Here is a link to Pricewatch and a page displaying many companies selling new versions of the memory I mentioned previously for as low as $29.00 per stick: http://www.pricewatch.com/memory/pc133_512mb.htm . I reviewed your motherboard manual from http://www.ecsusa.com and according to this as long as both sticks are identical they should work. Please understand that short of replacing the motherboard, this is probably your cheapest way to correct your memory increase issue.

I found the board at the ECS website.
The manual for it is at the address below.

I doesn't state in the manual about BIOS adjustments to enable maximum RAM.
It does state that you cant mix SDR with DDR. It also states that 1 gig is the max.

You can put the two 512 meg chips in one at a time to see if maybe one is bad.

It is probably a BIOS adjustment.
Look in your BIOS for entries pertaining to memory or ram.
If you find it, make sure that the frequency and the CASS latency are correct.
Make sure your FSB is set appropriately.

I hope this helps

You have a faulty slot. Take it somewhere like PC World and get a quote for a repair. Other than that can you not buy an individual 1 gig memory rather than have it in 2 cards? Sorry I am not very technologically minded so if that is not feasible forgive me.

Yes i remember and as i told you it's impossible for ddr and sdram to work together it doesn't if you insert ddr ram then this knocks the sd ram slots off and vice versa you can't mix and match different ram and then run it all together mate.

Faulty ram slot! It's that simple. These things happen!

Additional:
"Parity" error... see if you can see anything in the BIOS about non-ECC.
Are the 2 sticks of ram identical, or different makes?

I'd say another mobo is in order. Haven't looked in a while, check Weirdstuff.com,(parts store, reliable, and cheap), for mobo. If finances allow suggest mobo/cpu combo from Newegg.com, or try Directron.com. Should be able to find compatible with ram you just bought for $130. The processor should be faster/better though. Edit: Saw this at Newegg,http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813135025 and this http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010340343+1051707443&name=Socket+478

Some times when you want to upgrade RAM it must be with ECC support. Look at your system with SiSoft Sandra and it will tell you in tips about memory what you can or should do for upgrade to work properly

Tough luck, one of the DIMM slots is clearly dead. Best option would be to trade your 2x512mb for a 1Gb stick.
