No gore: "The Haunting of Hill House." An excellent B&W movie, "The Haunting" was made from it. I recommend both.

The top three scariest books I have read are:

1. It by Stephen King
2. The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty
3. The Shining by Stephen King

I also have a book called The Best of H.P. Lovecraft: Bloodcurdling Tales of Horror and the Macabre, and it is pretty scary! I saw where someone put The Haunting of Hill House as a scary one, but I just gone done reading it, and I thought it was really boring. If you don't like a lot of gore, John Saul is an excellent author to read. I also recently enjoyed Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill. Sorry I am getting so carried away. I love reading, and have read lots of good ones lately. : )

"The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson is pretty creepy. No gore or anything, but a lot of creepythings anyway. A short story is "The Yellow Wallpaper". Both of those are the creepiest ones I've read, with no gore.

I used to live around the corner from the Amityville Horror House - it was a pretty scary book. I saw the house lots of times, but nothing scary ever happened when I was over there. But William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist was much scarier. And second would be Ghost Story by Peter Straub. Pax- C

Red Dragon by Thomas Harris! Don't go near this if you have nightmares, even with the lights on I was nervous reading it. It's psychological and is written so well. I highly recommend it!

As people said the Shining was also a very bizarre and scary book, but the movie was not as good, they left out a bunch of quirks.

The Shining and Cujo by Stephen King were definitely scary, but my favorite scary book was Relic by Preston Douglas and Lincoln Childs. I gave it to my brother (an ex-Marine) and my son to read and they both said they had to wait to finish it until daylight because they were either alone in the house or downstairs while everyone else was sleeping and they kept getting spooked by seemingly normal house sounds.

The Case of Charles Dexter Ward by H P Lovecraft was a pretty shuddery experience.

Pet Sematary, by Stephen King. You'll sleep with the lights on for weeks afterward.

By far the Shinning by Stephen King. Read it twice. Neither movie did it justice.
