I mean, scary, like you have to sleep with the lights on.

Without a doubt, "It" is the scariest novel by the macabre Mr. King. I read it when I was 16, and I had to close the lid on the toilet, stopper up the sink and the tub and make sure the bathroom door was shut tight before I would go to sleep at night! If you read the book, you will understand why! The second-scariest is "The Shining." They are both great reads!

The Shining movie wasn't as scary as the book because it didnt include some of the bizarre things that you will come across in the book. I thought the best written horror book that I've ever read was Red Dragon, not by Stephen King but by Thomas Harris. In my opinion the best movie based on a Stephen King novel was the Shawshank Redemption.

There isn't an objective way to say whether King novels are scary. I've heard people say they wouldn't read his books after dark, that they were scared to death, that they read one and just couldn't read another one of his because it was so scary. There are probably an equal number of people who don't read them because they don't care for his subject matter or writing style. I loved every one he's written so far. However, I didn't think they were scary. Creepy and strange, definitely. Sometimes even gave me an 'Eww, gross." But I never had a nightmare because of his books, was never afraid to turn out the light, was never nail biting scared. For creepiness, I'd go with The Shining...maybe Salem's Lot. Cujo had more blood and gore than most of his books. I've heard a lot of people say that It was scary, but I read a lot of horror, and didn't find it scary. A very good read, but not scary to me. Some of his tamer titles would be Eyes of the Dragon and The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. And if you're into epic fantasy adventure, definitely give The Dark Tower a try. My favorites are The Stand, Duma Key and Lisey's Story. What scares you might not scare the next person, and what scares me probably wouldn't scare you. You have to try them to decide.

Wow, good question. I've had "lights on" experiences with a couple of his books/stories, and will never read them again:

Pet Sematary
Needful Things
The Breathing Method (from Different Seasons)
The Dark Half

Then there are some stories that I will read over and over, like The Stand, It, Firestarter, Eyes of the Dragon and Carrie.

Hmmm tough choice that one! I have a vivid imagination and have read most of Kings books! I think "It" was scary as was "needfull things" but the one that stirred my mind most was Desperation, you could actually see your own town going a little haywire! Makes you realise you dont know whats round the corner.... Or under the bed, lol!

the one that bothered me the most was insomnia. nothing king has written has ever scared me like that, but a book called house of leaves did scare me like that. I would say that the shining is great but I thought the movie was better than the book in the fear factor
