why is it when you touch a moth it has powdery stuff on its wings and it ends up on your fingers.what is this, on them for ???

Moths and butterflies belong to the order "Lepidoptera", which means scaly wings. It is those scales that give the wings their colours and patterns and that come off when you touch them.

I don*t know why it is on them, but I was told if that powder comes off they did soon after. Whether or not that is true I have no idea.
