An H back is a hybrid between a back and a tight end. Its Joe Gibbs invention. An H back is NOT a half back - Think Chris Cooley. Thats an H back. A small TE that you line up all over the place.

The biggest difference if the h-back is primarily a blocking back (usually a TE or a OT who is good on his feet). A half back (or tail back) in most offenses is the primary ball carrier.
