http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/chat/en/hardware_chat, try the tech chat support line. I think the printer should be unplugged from the computers USB port, the drivers uninstalled with it's uninstall feature,(if it has one), or the Add/Remove Programs, and go into Windows Explorer>My Computer>Local (C:) drive>Programs>, and remove anything that says Dell 940 printer. I'd also download CCleaner, and remove the registry leftover 'tidbits'. Then I would turn the computer completely off, wait 30 seconds, power it up,re-install the software, plug the printer back in, turn the printer on. Sometimes,(about 95%), if the printer is plugged in first, before the software is installed, Windows tries to install one of it's closests matched 'generic' drivers, and then a conflict insues, which driver do I use ? See if WinVista recognizes printer now. No? Throw Vista out the window use Ubuntu with Beryl.

If the printer is within warranty, and you have all the necessary information handy (your customer number, printer serial number, express code, etc.), I suggest you contact Dell. They will send you a new printer. They will charge you for a new printer, but will credit you with this amount when they receive the printer you have on hand. You must contact Dell first. Dell will send you an "authorization" to exchange. I have been this route with my Dell 922. Dell was very good about shipping a new printer within a couple of days.
Only one question: I hope you have installed Dell cartridges.
You can also join and try the Dell Community Forum where you can post your problem and hope another user of the 940 can be of assistance.

connect the printer to the pc... then go to windows update and check for updates.... there will proabably be something for your printer.. but make sure you look for "recive updates for other products" its under most recent check for updates... if that dosent work ... then when you want to print something in the top it should say your printers name ... if it dose not then click the arrow and it brings up a box .. click the printers name ... oh and you did install the cd that came with it right or of course it wont work

Make sure the cable from the printer to your pc is ok, and also that you have selected it as your primary printer.
