There are five Indian Nations that comprise the Five Civilized Tribes. I can only imagine that the name was originated in the early 1800s because the Cherokee, the Chickasaw, the Choctaw, the Creek, and the Seminole wished to live in peace and avoid confrontation with the U.S. Government.

Yet the government and the populace forced their hand in so many ways.

The Iroquois Confederacy: Mohawks, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora.
The Five Civilized Tribes: Cherokee, Choctaw, Creek, Seminole, and Chickasaw.
These were the tribes considered civilized by the whites because their forms of government most closely resembled something whites could understand.
The other tribes were as civilized but their way of living was misunderstood.
Many tribes, including the 11 listed above believed in slavery and considered Dog meat to be food, a white dog was highly prized among the Confederacy as a special honor if served to a guest or after an accomplishment.
There is no record of any tribe needing locks on their residences to keep their belongings safe from other tribe members; perhaps the whites who decided who was civilized were not actually in a position to decide what was actually civilized behavior.

I am no expert, but most experts I have read would consider the Cherokee the most civilized, but that is probably because the Cherokee most assimilated and most readily accepted the white/european culture and values.

However, civilized is a subjective judgment, and from what I have read there were many civilized tribes, and many, more civilized than the culture which destroyed them.

Don't make the mistake of labeling groups of people, especially when using a concept like civilization, which does not mean the same thing to all.

Not "were" ARE, we aren't talking about vanished societies or cultures.
The Five Civilized Tribes are as before mentioned the Cherokee,Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee (Creek),Seminole.
This historical reference "Civilized Tribes" is due to these tribes/nations high standards of governance of they're people.
These sovereign nations are just as historically ready for war or negotiations as any culture in the world, so dismiss the peace loving suggestion as a possible answer.
These nations have written constitutions, elected officials (by the people) , laws and law enforcement.
Think of the tribes as nations, nations that have negotiating powers.
These nations deal with the U.S. Government on a "Nation to Nation" basis.

All of them were civilized. The whites just wanted their land and didn't understand their culture. The Iroquois were considered pretty civilized. They united their five tribes with Britain against the U.S. and our congress was partially modeled after them (along with major Greco-Roman and English influences). For anything else, go do your own homework.

all civilizations considered themselves to be civilized, it's only their actions that tell the truth about how "civilized" they really are.

just watch "the new world" and determine for yourself whom is more "civilized".

All of them. It was the uncivilized whites that killed the Native Americans.
