You might want to check to make sure you have spark. I just had one that the plug wire was pinched by the cowling and shorted it out. Could be that simple. Yes to the carb cleaning. The best way is to soak it, and blow it out with compressed air. Make sure all the passages are clear. I went to Harbor freight and bought a ignition spark tester that hooks between the wire and the plug. $1.49 and it works great. A lot easier than the old grounding method. You can even see it in the daylight.

Check for spark - unplug the spark plug boot from the sparkplug , put a meal paperclip in it - lay it against the metal engine shroud/ground and have someone pull start it - there should be a bright blue spark - if not - it could either be a bad magneto or the engine brake ( controlled by the extra handle ) if it isnt adjusted right or worn, it can cause a no start situation.

Spark or fuel. Does it ever fire at all? If you pull the plug can you see it spark when you turn the engine over? If not check out the rest of the electrical system including the magneto. If you have spark then your problem is fuel. Remove the fuel line and make sure it and the fittings it attaches to on both ends are clear. Change the fuel filter if there is one.

It's hard to determine a problem this way, but try tightening the 'cable on/off'(the bar that pulls the cable to start he mower). Even a millimeter of 'not tight enoughness' can cause a perfectly good mower to not start.I'd suggest having a helper try to pull it real tight while you start it or vise versa.

buy a good push-reel mower and you will never have this problem again
