If these are investment pieces, do not restore, just clean and conserve. If these are for your living space, you can use wool thread to resew.

to wash, use plenty of water, and a mild mixture of baby shampoo. You should be able to scrub with a brush or broom to remove heavily soiled areas. hang dry outside out of direct sunlight.

whoa!!!! hold on there!!! i'm a pro cleaner. you could totally ruin it if we're talking about the expensive ones. call a carpet cleaning service certified(iicrc) in oriental rug cleaning. they will at least be able to tell you what you have and what it will take to clean them. i hope you aren't a carpet cleaner asking this. if you are you need to be certified and you had better be insured when dealing with this stuff! eating a fifty thousand dollar rug won't taste any better than a hundred dollar one.
