When somebody was asked why climb Mt. Everest, he said "because its there."
I do not know his reasons, but I can guess. He enjoyed climbing mountains, the camaraderie, the becoming an expert in the craft. At first, he learned from experience, then from sharing with others. One day, he realized that everybody asked questions to him, but he asked question to nobody. Like an addict, he needed more difficult challenges to get the same satisfaction. At that time, he decided to climb the tallest mountain in the world, to meet the greatest challenge, learn if possible whatever there is to be learned, to feel the camaraderie of others like him who had grown tired of lesser challenges.
I had always believed that everybody should be an expert in one area of knowledge. It is said that if you understand a flower, you understand the universe. It refers to the fact that if you learn one area really well, you may use the experience in other areas. Such idea is not obvious to people who do not live by it, but it is true. I have noticed that such learning is not a matter of choice in the usual sense of the word. If I am right about you, you would recognize those words as something you have always done and believed, but you cannot trace the moment when you made the decisions.

When I was a little girl I always had this feeling about my life when I grew up. The way I said it to myself sounds odd, but I was young and didn't know how to put it into adult words. I knew that I wanted to "use myself up." :)
As I grew up and had the language to express what I meant by those little girl words, I knew that it meant that I wanted to explore as much of who I was as possible, in as many directions as I could. On a physical level I knew I wanted to travel and explore the world. I don't think I knew exactly what the rest meant, except I knew I didn't want to die having been
afraid to explore all that I could be.
That didn't mean financial success or status. It meant finding out who I was inside and who I could grow to be inside.
I am very happy to say that if I should leave the planet tomorrow, that child me would be very content with the paths I've explored, the times I've been fearless, the fact that I learned to be vulnerable and my main success of which I am very proud of myself- I learned to love myself.
I don't know if this answer has anything to do with your question, but that is how it hit me. I think it's a great question.
