When we were stationed in Japan in the early 70's, a Japanese friend invited my wife and I to the TANABATA FESTIVAL. Tanabata (meaning "Seven Evenings") is a Japanese star festival, derived from Obon traditions and the Chinese star festival, Qi Xi. The festival is usually held on July 7, and celebrates the meeting of Orihime (Vega) and Hikoboshi (Altair). The Milky Way, a river made from stars that crosses the sky, separates these lovers, and they are allowed to meet only once a year. This special day is the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the lunisolar calendar. In present-day Japan, people generally celebrate this day by writing wishes, sometimes in the form of poetry, on tanzaku , small pieces of paper, and hanging them on bamboo, sometimes with other decorations. The bamboo and decorations are often set afloat on a river or burned after the festival, around midnight or on the next day. This resembles the custom of floating paper ships and candles on rivers during Obon. Many areas in Japan have their own Tanabata customs, which are mostly related to local Obon traditions. Toshio had us write our wishes and put them to float on the river.
We were in Sardinia in '74 and went to a local festival where all the food was free. It was some local saint's holiday and all we did was watch acts and eat and eat. We had a great tasting stew with meat that was a BIT chewy. We found out the stew's main ingredient was TRIPE....a cow's stomach.
I was in Italy for a while back in '79 and met some folks who invited me to a church's 300th birthday. My chief told me to go ahead (it was a Thursday) and all the cone heads in Italy seemed to be there. The town only had about 1,000 citizens at the top of a mountain but it was wall to wall people.

Not sure if it can be characterized as a festival, but I attended the commemoration of the Emperor's Birthday at the Palace in Tokyo during the late 1960s. I had won an honorable mention in the annual poetry writing contest of the Japan Times English language newspaper which was set up for for that occasion, having written a haiku about a mountain in Okinawa. So, I got the chance to read my poem to the Emperor and Empress.

Ya I would say that the Duct Tape Festival wins the prize.
The only festival I've been to (not unusual) was the Renaissance Festival.

Well, it wasn't so much the festival, as what happened at the Monterey Jazz Festival years ago. Miles Davis was playing and he was known for being tempermental at the time. The audience was warned that if they didn't shut up Miles would walk off the stage with his band. Things quieted down for about two minutes and then the noise started up again. Miles packed up his trumpet and left. I was soooooooo pi--ed!!! At the audience -not him.

On Bonaire they start the Christmas Season in the Dutch fashion around December 5. St. Nicholas arrives by boat on a white horse with the Black Peters and they all parade through town. If you've been good, he gives you candy, if you've been bad, the Petes put a burlap sack over your head and beat you with a stick.

August 6th, Hiroshima day and three days later Nagasaki day. These are not official days but nevertheless they are days that should never be forgotten. The people that died in these two cities were non combatants. These two bombs killed almost as many people as the total of the British dead. The British had been fighting for six years.

We host the Fookmoot every year in Western North Carolina. We have dance troupes from all over the world come in here and spend a week having parades and having shows. It is the highlight of the summer season here. I really love it.
