What causes a pontiac grand prix to sputter when starting?

It happens about once a week, but when starting sometimes, it will sputter for a couple of seconds and die. This is resolved everytime by giving it gas when it happens. Is there any simple fix to this?

Run a 16 oz. plastic can of 3-M Total Fuel System Cleaner straight into the fuel tank. Be sure the air and fuel filters are clean. If you haven't had plugs and ignition wires in the past 4 yrs. your overdue.
