Yes, there are much more African Americans in prison than whites. Here are the numbers according to the last prison census taken in June 2004--but these are only male prisoners--717 Whites, 1717 Latinos and 4919 African Americans. Why? Most crimes are committed in high poverty areas, such as ghettos and government housing projects, in which African Americans make up the great majority. Most people think it's racial--but it really isn't--it's the poverty, which just happens to be mostly black.

I disagree with the poverty aspect being the reason for their imprisonment. Considering only 13% of america is african american there is no legitimate reason why the majority of people in prison are black. There is a far larger amount of whites and other races that are poor in the country when taking the accumulative factor of all other races into perspective
