there never should be anything in front of it ...keep it clear`of all obstructions....never put any kind of furniture in front of it

You need enough room to allow the volume of air to move back to the air handler. If you have a 16x20 return grille, keep the objects far enough away so that the space is equal to 16 x 20 inches.

It is best to not have anything blocking the return, of course.

your return air grill should be unimcumbered

if its blocked i.e. a bookcase,coatrack,poster etc. it will starve the evaporator of air and cause it to ice up (same principle with keeping a clean filter)

Keep things at least a foot out from the grille. It is best if nothing is in front but with a foot you should get enough airflow.

My furniture is about 6 or 7 inches away

as much as possible the return air should not have any blockage.
