The main reason is that there is a chance of bacterial infection as bacteria finds the hot water system a better environment to breed in. You should not drink the water from a hot tap, but boil the water first. The chances may only be slim, but I will keep on boiling my water, especially for children.

It is not necessarily more hygienic the cold water in england comes straight from the mains so is ok to drink , The water from the hot tap in old systems comes from a header tank which provides pressure for a shower this water could be contaminated as it is in the loft and may not be covered very well Also it can be there for days if the place is not used for a time. So I would not personally drink from this tap.One in regular use should be ok and be all right in small doses . modern systems have a pressurised tank which is sealed and will be just as safe as the cold so if your place is under say four years old there wil be no problem.

didn't know it was. It is more hygienic to have taps with levers you push/pull as you can use elbows to turn on water - no dirty hands on taps which defeats washing them as they get dirty as you turn off.
