In the written version, Legolas always recovered as many of his own spent arrows as he could before moving on.

There isn't a lot of drama or action associated with hunting the woods for arrows, so it wasn't shown in the film version.

He conserved them by sometimes using them as daggers instead.

The real reason, of course, is that in a movie it's far more interesting to see someone fire arrows than gather them up into his quiver. In a movie where wizards and dwarves battle against orcs and uruk-hai, you don't have to worry too much about overall realism.

Bloody filmakers...they are sooo unrealistic sometimes. Like in Johnny English they don't even have earpieces but can hear each other clear as a bell when they talk into their WRISTS

OMG!? finally i found someone who wondered about that! omg, seriously, like he never runs out, and he shoots so much throughout like a war or fighting scene, yet he pulls more out to shoot. ive never been able to let this slide, but i always wonder about this whenver i watch the movies!

He probably steals other people's who are around him during the battle...then the victims of this crime run out and get stuck with a sword through the chest. tut* that thieving bugger
