I got a small tub of premixed white grout at Lowe's yesterday and an employee told me that to make it the correct shade as the grout I am repairing, to mix paint with it until it is the color I want. Is this accurate? Does the kind of paint I use matter? Is this going to compromise the quality of the hardness of the grout?

NO you should be able to get a grout color chart from them or HOME DEPOT it is just like a paint color chart , then get the correct color grout and then repair it,... it will be virtually impossible to get that color exact by mixing paint in it also if it is premixed wet grout " in a tub" adding more liquid will screw it up , that guy was a bone head do not follow his advise, good luck from TEXAS

The person that you bought this from at the store should be trained for doing things like this and NO it won't compromise the quality of the grout you want to use. For the most part the paint dye is just harmless food dye. It won't run and it won't break up grout. If it really matters to you, you can ask for a pamphlet on how they mix paint there. There should be such there at the store. You have the right as a customer to know all your options and the store you buy it from has a responsibility to its customer to provide documentation for do it yourself jobs.

They make pigments to color grout. I think I would go back to Lowe's and ask to see the colored pigments. There are also tubes of coloring to spread over the white grout to color the grout. Neither will compromise the grout by changing the consistency of the grout.

He's correct, it should be water-based paint, acrylic or latex.
There are pre-mixed standard colours available.
But getting an exact match will be very tricky.
The colour will darken slightly when it sets.
