In this corner ... dinosaurs first appear in the fossil record about 230 million years ago, and disappeared about 65 million years ago. (Although a few surviving species went on to become the modern birds.) That's about 165 million year reign.

And in this corner ... mammals first appear (as "true mammals") in the form of the monotremes about 123 million years ago, picked up a big head of steam with the dinosaurs gone, and are still going strong. Total: about 123 million years.

And the winner is ... dinosaurs. But if mammals hang on for only another 40 million years, they will take the lead.

Dinosaurs:

Both the alligator and shark are left over from the dinosaur period and have changed very little in the evolutionary process....

even if dinosaurs lived longer than humans have existed until that rock falls and wipes us out we're going to outlive them. and we're still going to survive because mammals are better able to adapt then reptiles, that's why they survived the last meteor strike and the reptiles were mostly wiped out.
