In reality, the mere fact that Turkey is a Muslim country should not be an issue. As Roderick pointed out Albania is a Muslim country, as was the former Bosnia. Both are on the European continent. Islam has always existed in Europe.
What concerns me more is the level of poverty there (is Europe ready to take onboard a country of nearly
70, 000, 000 people who don't have the same standard of living as most other Europeans ...?
Other issues that need to be resolved before Turkey can enter the EU would be : their occupation of Cyprus, their lack of respect for the country of Armenia and the Kurds, child labour, ....
EDIT :
@Trucker : What planet are you on? Since when is Europe anti-christ ....??? Have you been drinking again (lol)
@ Sean F. Cyprus is occupied by Turkey. Not Greece ! I see you deleted your answer ....

To make some answerers to learn abit before commenting with an empty brain;
* Turks are living on Cyprus for 500 years. After Greek cypriots began killing civilians Turkish army send forces to the island. That's not called invading. That is called justice.
* Turks are fighting with PKK not with Kurds. PKK is a terrorist organization kills babies by breaking down into houses at night and running like dogs in the day.What a freedom warriors eh. They are puppets of some European nations who want a weak state instead of a strong one like Turkey in the location.
I truly don't want Turkey to be a member of the union like the most of my fellow countrymen.

yes. Europe will need the 70+ Turks into its borders to sustain its economies. Plus Turkey is a secular Muslim country with a strong army. Europe needs more Muslims on its side beside Albania and Kosovo ( mere micro states). Also the Turkish economy is growing very fast. It will be a strong pillar in the European economy if this continues

They are a secular Muslim country and deserve the same chance as the rest of Europe, Millions of Turks have lived and worked in Germany post 1945 to the present day and present no problems.
