I once tried to write a story about college football, but it didn't seem to work out. I gave up on it because I read over what I wrote on the characters playing football, and it was totally cheesy. Can someone tell me how to write a good football story?

You need some kind of a conflict on the team. What conflicts could there be? Two star players hate each other? One is caught cheating and is disqualified to play? Think of conflicts ... Brian's Song was an absolutely wonderful football novel. Two best friends one white one black - one gets cancer and the other helps him through it. Brainstorm - come up with conflicts and work from there. Pax - C

A good football book - or any team sport book - has a built in template for writing it. The story of the team, its players and coach as it progresses over its schedule, is a ready-made drama with a cast of characters in place.

Championship years often make the best books, but near-misses and comedic last-place dog teams make for good reading, and writing, too.
