I was watching the wisconsin game yesterday, and saw a reciever wearing number 2, then on defense, a completely different player, a linebacker, wearing number 2 as well. I looked again, and they were NOT the same player. I thought that was against the rules? And why would you want to share a number anyway?

Yes, but the duplicate number player cannot be playing in the game. Many teams have all the players dress for home games, so there are more players than numbers available, so newbees will have to share a number with a vet player.

On the road, only the players who may play will go on the trip (to save money) so you are less apt to see dupe numbers on opponents jerseys or your team when they are away.

Yes, actually they can, but two players wearing the same number are not allowed to be on the field at the same time. Whenever teams need to give more than 1 player the same number, they make sure that one defensive player get it, and one offensive player get it. Usually the duplicate numbers are handed out to players who aren't likely to see any playing time in the game.

Yes. Cal does it. They just cant have the same numbers on the same side of the football. One person has to b on defense and the other has to be on offense. The reason why is because there are so many players on college fotball team. Its only illegal in the nfl.

With college teams having 85 scholarship players and not too mention their scout teams, there's a chance 2 players will share a number

In the NFL during preseason they are allowed to wear the same number because of the initial cut but during college games. I never heard of the same team having two players wearing the same jersey

There are more than 100 players on a team at one time.

Yes in college football, a team can have two players wear the same number as long as one is on deffence and the other on offence.

I believe it depends on team/school rules, but it does happen. When it occurs, it appears to be players on different parts of the team (e.g. offense and defense). For example, in yesterday's Cal/Tennessee game, Cal player #1 DeSean Foster returned a punt for a touchdown on special teams, while earlier in the game #1 Worrell Williams (defense) returned a fumble for a touchdown.

Cal's roster by number shows numerous duplicates

No. It might have been the same player playing 2 positions.
