A stock is a percentage of the company. If a company, for example, has 1,000,000 million shares of stock outstanding, and you have 10,000 shares of the stock, you would own 1% of the company (10000/1000000).

Are you talking about stocks, like on the stock market?
That would be shares in publicly held companies (as opposed to privately owned companies). for instance, Johnson & Johnson is a publicly held company. I can buy part of that company by buying Johnson & Johnson stock. And then each quarter, the profit and losses are added up, and since they always seem to have a profit, they pay me a dividend as my share of the profits for my ownership.

I hope that helps.
