I've only been watching for a few years and "going down hill" is being kind. I've noticed a huge difference. I also read in one of the soap mags, that the Latham woman (new producer) has brought in a whole new staff, writers and all, having gutted the original Bell staff. That's when we started seeing a favorite actor dying or written off, contracts not renewed, actors re-cast and story lines that come out of left field, making no sense and going nowhere!!!

I'd say it was an ill wind that blew the Latham woman onto the set and into the power seat of Y&R. Maybe the network needs to take a closer look and do a re-cast of this woman. I am aware of an actual Petition to get rid of her, so it's not just a few disgruntled fans, there's a very vocal army out there that don't appreciate what's been happening to their favorite soap opera.

I was just talking to my mom about this yesterday...My mom has been watching Y & R since way before I was born (I'm 16) So I pretty much grew up watching it. Before Bill Bell died it was great! Like the other person said it had a type of elegance amd class and was different from the other soaps. Now there are too many quick changes, people being killed, etc. I wish someone would come along make it interesting again. I really hate the storylines now. When you start to like them they all of a sudden make a change to where you hate it! I have officially stopped watching it and my mom is on the verge of doing same!

Y&R should NOT have gone down since Bill Bell died, and it wouldn't have if it weren't for Lynn Marie Latham. I often wonder if Bell himself hired her to begin with, and if he did, what in the hell was he thinking? I guess Y&R was his only passion, as he didn't see the soaps she has worked on previously that got ruined. I believe Port Charles was one of them.

This statement would not have been true if Bell and his wife had shopped for a talented writer who knew the histories behind the show and characters, and would know better than to create ridiculous characters and/or storylines, before he kicked the bucket.

It happens... each writer has their own fingerprint and style. The same thing happened with General Hospital when Gloria Monty died and now it is in a writer's hand, er pen, that makes different storylines stand out.... at least we can still enjoy characters, their interactions to a point. But that is why the original creator/writer made the stories so great.....

I concur. I watched Y&R years ago with my mom and picked it back up about 7 months ago. I cannot get over the repeated and over-ly done story lines and how they drag on and on and on....at least the characters had some dignity and class....now they all seem to be shady.

oh yes, big time. y&r had before a certain kind of class, elegance, not anymore and i never have seen so matter characters being killed off, or coming back from the dead etc.
